Peace Initiatives – Haiti Mission

Peace Initiatives – Haiti Mission

After the Haiti earthquake of 2010, Peace Initiatives gave a big embrace of solidarity to the Haitian community. In a country where impoverished living conditions were already a barrier, the earthquake exacerbated the situation even more.  This reality moved Peace Initiatives to join the group of organizations and entities around the world that tirelessly worked to counteract the impact of the natural disaster. Inspired by the resilience capacity of the Haitian people, their history and culture, the team of volunteers ended up founding a home away from home in Haiti.

iniciativas-de-paz-com 2Our projects in Haiti:

“Kai Lapè” (or Peace House) is our missionary house. Since its inauguration, it has received over 1,500 volunteers from all over the world. The house functions as a meeting space for workshops, trainings and community gatherings.

From Kai Lapè…

  • Mobile clinics are deployed, a strategy that allows us to establish medical service points in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Health promotion capacity-building workshops are offered to midwives and promoters of agroecology in the community of Blanchard in Port-au-Prince.

“Kè Kontant” (or Happy Heart), an early childhood alternative education center, was established in 2013.  Although currently on hold, the center offered the following:

  • Bon jou Ayití (or Good morning Haiti), a nutrition program that offers breakfast to elementary school kids.
  • School of Peace, a Head Start for preschoolers program focused on child development, art and preventive health care.
  • Renmen Haiti Camp, a summer educational and health promotion program for the children of the community of Blanchard developed by Iniciativa Comunitaria and Operation Unisson, Inc. (OUI) in 2013.

Mision Haiti IP edPeace Initiatives is a program made up of volunteers driven by love, compassion and a strong belief in the capacity of each community to find and create solutions to their problems. To help in the problem-solving process, we work with each community in the development of responsible and cost-effective public health strategies based on their needs.
